Jean C. Leuchtenberger

Jean C. Leuchtenberger, 75, of Prospect Street died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsburgh on Oct. 13, 1930, daughter of Carl and Jean Newell Carlson, she graduated from Peabody High School in Pittsburgh in 1948 and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952, where she received a bachelor's degree in English. She received her master's degree in early childhood education in 1973 from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. From 1973 to 1979, Mrs. Leuchtenberger lived in Lima, Peru, where she taught at Franklin D. Roosevelt School for seven years. She moved to the Berkshires in 1979 and taught elementary grades in North Adams for three years at a school affiliated with the former North Adams State College. She then taught in Hillsdale, N.Y., at Taconic Hills Elementary School, retiring in 1993. She was a member of West Stockbridge Congregational Church and the Thursday Morning Club. She also was a volunteer for the Literacy Program and taught English as a second language until early this year. She enjoyed traveling the world, gardening and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. Her husband Martin Leuchtenberger, whom she married Oct. 16, 1954, in Cleveland, died in 1989. She leaves a son, Mark W. Leuchtenberger of Newton; three daughters, Mary J. Leuchten-berger of Tucson, Ariz., Carol A. Johnson of Bedford and Jan C. Leuchtenberger of Tacoma, Wash.; three grandsons, and two granddaughters. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service celebrating the life of Jean C. Leuchtenberger, who died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at West Stockbridge Congregational Church. The school "affiliated" with the former NASC was Mark Hopkins Campus School. It was a great little school and Mrs. Leuchtenberger was my 3rd grade teacher.
