Thomas P. Hurley

Thomas P. Hurley, 88, of 512 Oak St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield after a long battle with cancer. Born in Haverhill on March 28, 1918, son of Tim and Mary Lyons, he graduated from high school there. He received degrees with honor from both the Franklin Institute and Brown University. He was a radar specialist in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Hurley was employed by Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams as a chemical engineer from 1948 until his retirement in 1987, with three U.S. patents in his name. He volunteered for the Red Cross many times, including such events at the Northridge Earthquake in California and hurricanes and floods in Puerto Rico and Kansas City. He was a golfer and a member of the Taconic Golf Club for 47 years. He and his wife, Marjorie, were married Sept., 8, 1961. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Steve Hurley of Seattle and Patrick Hurley of Zurich, Switzerland; a daughter, Dr. Susan Hurley of Studio City, Calif.; and two granddaughters. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Thomas P. Hurley died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Donations in his honor can be made the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington. A memorial service will be held there on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m., at 108 School St. Bennington, Vt. He also leaves two granddaughters, Ariel and Lyla, and a daughter-in-law, Lauren. In retirement, he traveled the world with his wife. Among other achievements, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa at the age of 70, and bungee-jumped into a gorge at 75. In the last 14 years of his retirement, he and Marjorie spent winters in Mexico and Naples, Fla.
