Frank X. McWilliams

Frank X. McWilliams, 83, of 10 Main St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Jan. 21, 1923, son of Andrew F. and Helen Flynn McWilliams, he attended Dartmouth College and was a 1944 graduate of Columbia University's Bard College, which at that time was an undergraduate college, where he majored in math. He and his sister Marie purchased their present home in Stockbridge in 1965. After graduation he studied traffic management and then joined Carbon Black Export Corp., a Webb corporation. He learned about government financing of export shipments, marine insurance and charting, and was invited to join Columbian Carbon Co., which merged with City Service. When the company moved to Tulsa, he remained in New York and joined Continental Grain Co. He retired from there in 1985. He was president of McWilliams Transit Inc. in the 1960s, which owned and operated sea-going coal barges. He enjoyed classical music and his frequent trips to Tanglewood. He liked staying at the Red Lion Inn, then owned by the Treadway family. He was a member of the Lenox Club. He leaves his sister, Marie McWilliams, of Stockbridge. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Frank X. McWilliams died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006. Per his request, a private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of arrangements.
