David J. Flaherty

David John Flaherty, 54, of 691 Curran Memorial Highway died Wednesday at home. He was a longtime member of the North Adams Police Department. Born in North Adams on Oct. 19, 1946, son of Lillian May Reynolds Flaherty and the late William Ernest Flaherty, and grandson of the late John F. Flaherty, North Adams police chief, he was educated in Williamstown schools and graduated from Mount Greylock Regional High School in 1964. While at Mount Greylock, he was active in sports. He was a member of the Williamstown Boys Club and its basketball team. He was also active in Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball teams. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he had enlisted in the Navy in 1964 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was first employed by the former Hunter Machine Co. in North Adams, the General Cable Co. in Pownal, Vt., and the General Excavating Co. of Albany, N.Y. He joined the North Adams Police Department in 1972 and, at the time of his death, was serving as court officer and armourer and firearms instructor. A communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church, he was a member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion of North Adams and the Massachusetts Police Association. He was also a past president of Local 403 International Brotherhood of Police Officers. Besides his mother, of Williamstown, he leaves his wife, the former Patricia A. Kateley; a daughter, Lisa Greene of Bennington, Vt.; a son, Chief Warrant Officer William E. Lewis of the Army, stationed with the 7th Army Training Command in Grafenwdehr, Germany; two brothers, William Francis Flaherty of Pompano Beach, Fla., and James Edward Flaherty of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 7, at 9:30 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 70 Marshall St. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, July 6, from 4 to 8. Flowers accepted, or memorial donations to the Eileen Barrett Oncology Unit of NARH or Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home.
