Charles Hibbard

Charles R. Hibbard Jr., 78, of 250 Laurel St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Lenox on Sept. 3, 1922, son of Charles R. and Albertha Hutchinson Hibbard, he was a 1940 graduate of Lenox High School, where he was a star pitcher for the baseball team that won the Berkshire County championship in 1940. In 1942, he pitched professionally for the Pittsfield Electrics in the Canadian-American League. He joined the Army in 1943 and served in the European theater in the 951st Field Artillery Battalion. After returning to Lenox in 1945, he played semipro baseball. In 1952, he moved to Lee and was employed by the former Mohawk Beverages of Pittsfield as a Pepsi deliveryman for 36 years. He retired in 1984. Mr. Hibbard was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2568. He was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing, and playing cards and pool. His wife, the former June A. Turner of Lee, whom he married Nov. 18, 1952, died Oct. 26, 1985. He leaves two daughters, Christine H. Lovejoy of Worcester and Catherine J. Hibbard of Loomis, Calif. Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, with the Rev. Robert J. Bella, rector of St. Helena's Chapel, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery, Lee. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 5 to 8 at Roche Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2568 of Lenox or to the Lenox Department of Parks and Recreation, both in care of the funeral home.
