Robert LaBrode

Robert Danis LaBrode, 81, of 109 Euclid Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on July 1, 1920, son of Henry C. and Anna May Danis LaBrode, he was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He also attended Worcester Academy. He served in the Army during World War II and participated in Operation Overload, the Allied invasion of Normandy. He landed at Utah Beach with the 462 Amphibious Truck Co., 1st Engineer Specialist Brigade. Mr. LaBrode was employed in the automotive sales industry, retiring in 1983 after 35 years of service at Johnson Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Polish Community Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 68, the Rainbow Club and the United Commercial Travelers. A member of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association, he refereed hockey games from youths to high school and prep school for more than 30 years. He was a longtime member of the Pontoosuc Lake Country Club and Skyline Country Club. He enjoyed bowling and fishing, and was on a number of championship candlepin and 10-pin teams throughout his bowling years. He collected coins and stamps, and enjoyed reading. In 1995, he and his wife, Edith, received an award for borrowing the most books from the Berkshire Athenaeum. His wife, the former Edith M. Goddard, whom he married May 17, 1947, died Feb. 15. He leaves three sons, Robert D. LaBrode of Savoy, Peter J. LaBrode of Fort Worth, Texas, and David P. LaBrode of Haverhill; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:15 a.m. from the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the National World War II Memorial, the American Lung Association of Western Mass, or the National Kidney Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
