George W. Maihl

George Wilmer "Will" Maihl, 90, of 79 View Drive died Wednesday at the Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield. Born in Baltimore, Md., on Oct. 18, 1910, son of Thomas W. and Etta Louise Parr Maihl, he attended schools there and graduated from the Maryland Art Institute. He also graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor of science degree. Mr. Maihl moved to Pittsfield in 1951 and was employed by GE in the transformer design department as a lightning engineer. He later worked in the ordinance department teaching Navy members and, during his last seven years there, was a writer of textbooks for the Navy. He was an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he taught Sunday school and did volunteer work on committees. He also taught classes at Pittsfield High School, Berkshire Community College and for the GE Apprentice Program, and performed weekly volunteer work for the American Red Cross at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northampton. Mr. Maihl was a life member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers and served as chairman of its local chapter from 1969 to 1970. He won a prize for his article, "15 years effect of lightning on electrical equipment," which was later published in the magazine Electrical World. He leaves his wife, the former Margaret E. Arnold, whom he married Oct. 1, 1938. The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon at 1 in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. David J. DeSmith officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Richmond. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, which is in charge of arrangements.
