Reginald Rowett Jr., 81
FLORIDA, Mass. — Reginald Rowett Jr., 81, of 229 Central Shaft Road died Friday, April 6, 2007, at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was taken after being stricken earlier at home.
He served as the town's veterans' agent for many years and as its wire inspector.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, on Jan. 31, 1926, son of Reginald Rowett Sr. and Elsie Wilkinson Rowett, he was raised by his grandparents, Frederick and Cecelia Rowett of North Adams, and graduated from Drury High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a medic in the India-Burma-China campaigns from April 17, 1944, to April 24, 1946. He was discharged with the rank of corporal.
Mr. Rowett was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for more than 40 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams, where he served as an usher, and a member and past president of the Florida Lions Club. He was a former member of the Greylock Lodge of Masons and the Florida Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Florida Senior Center and George L. Curran Post 996 VFW in North Adams. He also enjoyed fishing with his son and grandson.
He and his wife, the former Marie Marguerite "Dolly" Poirot, were married May 28, 1949, in St. John's Episcopal Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David L. Rowett and his wife, Kathleen, of Florida; a daughter, Karen L. Cooper and her husband, Bruce, of Florida; four grandchildren, Jennifer Cooper of North Adams, Tyler Cooper and Matthew Rowett, both of Florida, and Ileana Whiteman of Hinsdale, and several cousins, brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Another grandson, Charles Bruce Cooper, died July 21, 2004.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Rowett will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams by the Rev. Edward King, rector. Burial will be held later this spring in Church Cemetery in the town of Florida.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Donations may be made in his memory through the funeral home.
