Thomas Mark Szumowski

Thomas Mark Szumowski, 50, of Ashland Park Apartments, 150 Ashland St., died April 20 at home after a brief illness. Born in Northampton on May 12, 1956, son of S. Thomas and Vera Mielesko Szumowski, he attended schools in Easthampton and was a 1974 graduate of Easthampton High School and a 1983 graduate of Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. A self-employed illustrator, Mr. Szumowski specialized in wildlife art. He designed many commemorative stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, including the Duck Stamp and his most memorable one, the Old Man on the Mountain in New Hampshire. He won a National Arts for the Parks contest with his illustration of a lighthouse on the Maine Coast and an award for his illustration of the Golden Monkeys of China. He also illustrated a series of posters for the Cincinnati Zoo. His illustrations ran in many publications, including Yankee Magazine and a book written by Isaac Asimov, and for such commercial clients as Kodak, Disney, Camel and Marlboro cigarettes. He also did the Welch's Grape Jelly dinosaur jars series. His work was shown by Michaelson's Gallery of Northampton. Besides his parents, of Easthampton, he leaves two sons, Nicholas Szumowski of Worcester and Daniel Szumowski of Quincy; two sisters, Deborah Szumowski of England and Karen Szumowski of San Francisco; and a brother, Mark Szumowski of San Francisco. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorial services and burial for Thomas Mark Szumowski, who died Friday, April 20, 2007, will be private. Memorial donations are suggested for the American Heart Association, in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
