Bernice J. Estes

Bernice J. Estes, 97, formerly of 130 East Windsor Road, died Wednesday at Curtis Manor Retirement Home, where she had resided since November 2005. Born in Mansfield on April 17, 1910, daughter of Charles and Lydia Jacques Sturtevant, she was educated in schools there. Mrs. Estes was the town clerk in Windsor for several years before becoming a homemaker. She had been a member of Windsor Congregational Church since May 1931 and was an active member of the Ladies' Aid group and the Hilltop Grange. She also was past regent of Fort Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the National Society of the DAR. She enjoyed quilting, playing the piano and knitting. She and her husband, Raymond Estes, were married in 1929 in East Greenbush, N.Y.He died in February 2005. She leaves two daughters, Marjorie E. Limburg of Dalton and Joan Crandall of Kingman, Ariz.; a brother, George Sturtevant of Windsor; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside service for Bernice J. Sturtevant Estes, who died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, will be conducted Thursday, May 31, at 4 p.m. at Shaw Cemetery in Windsor, by the Rev. Levi Davenport. Family and friends who wish to attend may meet at the cemetery at 3:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Windsor Congregational Church, Old Route 9, Windsor, MA 01270. She also leaves six grandchildren, Karen Smith of British Columbia, Canada, Fred Limburg of Dalton, Wayne and Mark Crandall of Arizona, Bonnie Black of Arizona and Donna Packard of Arkansas; and nieces and nephews. A grandson, William Limburg, died in 1978. Mrs. Estes was a locally renowned pie baker.
