Stanley Stanaway

Stanley Stanaway, 66, of 33 Cortland Place, a retired Navy chief petty officer, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Oct. 29, 1934, son of Stanley and Bevcra Stanaway, he was educated in local schools and attended Richmond High School. Enlisting in the Navy at age 17, he served in several different countries, including France and Vietnam, as well as the United States. He was aboard several ships, including the USS Wasp and the USS Roan. He was stationed as an instructor at the Naval Reserve on Vin Hebert Boulevard in Pittsfield for three years and retired in 1974. He then was employed by the city of Pittsfield in its Highway Department as a sign painter and with the road striping and crosswalk painting crew. He retired in the mid-1980s. He was a member of the Dalton American Legion Post 155. He enjoyed softball games at the Softball Complex and watching baseball games on TV and in person. He also enjoyed fishing and building and racing radio-controlled cars. He leaves his wife of 35 years, the former Florence M. Murray, whom he married March 19, 1966; a son, Kirk E. Stanaway of Pittsfield; three daughters, Joyce Murnane of Manchester, N.H., Janet Roebuck of Belmont, N.H., and Linda Butts of Haverhill; two brothers, Thomas Stanaway of Jackson, N.J., and Jack Stanaway of Woodbury, N.J., and eight grandchildren. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Thursday from 4 to 7. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 at Devanny-Condron Funeral Home. Burial will full military rites will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Veterans' Outreach Center in care of the funeral home.
