Michael B. F. Matz, 27

GREAT BARRINGTON — Michael Bergson Fichman Matz, 27, of New York and Great Barrington, died on Sunday, March 23, 2008, at his home in Great Barrington, following a long illness. He was surrounded by family and friends. Born in Queens, N.Y, on Oct. 23, 1980, son of Eliyho and Barbara Fichman Matz of Great Barrington, he was a 1998 graduate of Monument Mountain High School and attended Berkshire Community College and Worcester State College before relocating to New York City. Mr. Matz worked as a salesman in a small office supply company in New York. He loved his job, his music, movies and video games, and passionately read a broad spectrum of books ranging from philosophy to political satire to espionage. He held a black belt in tae kwon do and enjoyed traveling and observing the beauty of nature. Mr. Matz especially loved being in the company of family and friends, who say he was bright and thoughtful, sweet, sensitive and always caring toward others. Besides his parents, he leaves his brother, David Matz of Great Barrington; his grandparents, Milton Fichman of Pittsfield and Moshe and Zahava Matzozky of Israel; a close aunt, uncles and cousins, and several circles of friends in the Berkshires, New York and Israel. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Sara Fichman. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Michael Matz will be conducted Tuesday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire by Rabbi Deborah Zecher. Burial will follow at Ahavath Sholom Cemetery in Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Hevreh of Southern Berkshire Religious School for a Michael Matz Memorial Writing Competition through Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Remembrances, memories and reflections may be sent to the family through www.finnerty andstevens.com. Michael remained upbeat and optimistic, maintaining his own finely-honed sense-of-humor to the end. In his too-short life, he touched the lives of many. His vitality and strength of spirit will long endure in our hearts. We will miss him dearly.
