John E. Stanton Sr., 76

NEW MARLBOROUGH — John E. "Jack" Stanton Sr., 76, of Mill River Great Barrington Road died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, as a result of an accident while he was mowing the lawn at a residence near his home. Born in New Marlborough on Sept. 24, 1932, son of Eldred A. and Mildred Guartha Stanton, he attended local schools and was a graduate of the former New Marlborough High School. He also attended mechanic's school in Chicago. A Marine veteran of the Korean War, he served for four years, first at Camp Lejune, N.C., and, upon returning to the States, at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Mr. Stanton worked alongside his father for many years at Stanton's Garage in Mill River. After the death of his father, he sold the garage to John B. Ormsbee. He was a longtime member and former commander of Harold Rood American Legion Post 350. He was also a former member and officer of the New Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed Sunday adventures to the tractor store and working on his mowers. He cherished spending time with his family and friends and liked watching wrestling and playing setback. He also enjoyed time spent with his animals. He and his wife, the former Priscilla "Skip" Blass, were married on Dec. 11, 1981. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons and daughters-in-law, John E. Stanton Jr. and his wife, Doris, and James and Diana Stanton, all of Lee, and Robert and Sheri Stanton of Hinsdale; his sister, Pat Nourse and her husband, Howard, of Monterey; a stepdaughter, Leslie Zinke and her husband, Wayne, of Canaan, Conn., 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE — A service celebrating the life of Jack Stanton will be conducted Monday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. from Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington by the Rev. Brian Care. Burial with military honors will follow in Carroll Cemetery in Mill River. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 2 until 5 at the funeral home. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the New Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department, the New Marlborough First Responders or Harold Rood American Legion Post 350 through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
