William A. Steuer, 82
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — William A. Steuer, 82, of 104 Greylock Ave. died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in Adams on Jan. 29, 1927, son of William A. and Julia Les Steuer, and stepson of Frank C. Steuer from the age of 10. He spent much of his youth on the farm of his maternal grandparents in Cheshire, where he became a great outdoorsman. He attended schools in Adams and received his high school diploma in 1945 in absentia, having enlisted in the Navy his senior year at the age of 17.
A veteran of World War II, he served three years as a pharmacist's mate aboard the USS Roberts. He was a member of American Legion Post 225.
Mr. Steuer was employed by Williams College in Williamstown, retiring after 22 years of service. He first worked at the former General Electric in Pittsfield then at Noel Inc. for 15 years, followed by a short stint at the former Shapiro Chevrolet dealership.
A dedicated sportsman, he relished fishing, hiking and hunting. He took great joy in his family, who were everything to him, and especially loved showing off his down-home culinary talents. He was an enthusiastic cribbage player, and was well known for his quick wit and sense of humor.
He and his wife, the former Jeanne Noel, were married on April 30, 1949, in the former Notre Dame Church in Adams.
Besides his beloved wife, he leaves two sons, Robert C. Steuer and his wife, Andrea, of Shaftsbury, Vt., and Michael W. Steuer and his wife, Cheryl, of Adams; two daughters, Barbara J. Steuer of Adams and Karen Steuer and her husband, Paul Sherman, of Lyndeborough, N.H.; two sisters, Doris McAndrews of Naples, Fla., and Nancy Cwalinski and her husband, Walter, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert C. Steuer.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours for Mr. Steuer will be held Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
