GEORGE VanZANDT, SR

George D. VanZandt Sr., 73, of Goose Pond and 20603 Candle Wood Hollow Road, Estero, Fla., died Thursday at North Collier Hospital in Naples, Fla. He owned and operated George D. VanZandt Co. in Lenox Dale. Born in Lenox on Oct. 8, 1927, son of Edward and Felicia Harrier VanZandt, he attended Lenox schools. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the service, Mr. VanZandt was employed by Arrow Vent Co. in Albany, N.Y., in the sheet-metal business. In 1952, he moved to Lee and opened his own sheet-metal business. He retired in 1990. He owned and operated G. and G. Restaurant on Goose Pond during the 1970s and '80s. He also was involved in various real estate dealings and developed George Street in Lee. Mr. VanZandt moved to Tyringham in 1980 and to Florida in 1990, while maintaining his home in Tyringham. He enjoyed boating, gambling and cooking. His first wife, the former Eileen Flynn, whom he married Sept. 30, 1950, died June 6, 1969. He leaves his wife, the former Patricia Ann Almeida, whom he married Oct. 28, 1989; two sons, George D. VanZandt Jr. and Michael J. VanZandt, both of Lee; a sister, Ruth E. Canales of Atkinson, N.H.; four grandchildren, and six stepgrandchildren. George D. VanZandt is also survived by six stepgrandchildren. He also leaves his loving grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Stephen and Scott VanZandt. He was predeceased by three brothers, Edward, John and Clarence VanZandt, and three sisters, Emily Duplis, Eileen Hurley and Grace Toscanno. The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, Jan. 2, from 4 to 8.
