Harry P. Chesbro, 80
CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Harry P. Chesbro, 80, of 64 Woods Road died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after being admitted. He was a well-known civic leader in Clarksburg, serving as town constable and chief constable and several terms as a selectman.
Born in North Adams on Jan. 16, 1930, a son of Harry A. and Isabelle Savage Chesbro, he attended schools in North Adams and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1948.
He served for two years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. Chesbro was the owner and operator of HP Chesbro General Construction. He also was a stationary engineer at Crane & Co. in Dalton for several years.
He was a former member of the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Co., serving from 1955 to 1972 and as the elected chief from 1964 to 1972. He was a member of the Lafayette Lodge of Masons and past master of the Williamstown Williams Masonic Lodge. He was well known as a horse lover and was involved with draft horse and pony competitive events. Late in life, he learned to play the violin.
He and his wife, the former Joan Haskins, were were married on July 17, 1954.
Besides his wife of 36 years, he leaves two daughters, Susan Bush and her husband, Philip, of Pownal, Vt., and Pamela Chesbro of Clarksburg; a son, Peter R. Chesbro and his wife, Debra, of Stamford, Vt.; two brothers Carlyle C. Chesbro Sr. and Howard Chesbro, both of Clarksburg; two sisters, Marie Sherman-Hibbard and Lois Horton; three grandchildren, Colette Klein and her husband, Harry, of Stamford, David Bugbee and his wife, Jessica, of Stamford, and Jeremy Bacon and his wife, Callie, of Stamford, and five great-grandchildren, Matthew Bugbee, Jacob Bugbee, Kaitlynn Karo, Mackenzie Klein and Hayli Bacon.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Chesbro will take place Monday, Aug. 16, at 11 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. Burial with military honors will follow in Clarksburg Cemetery.
Calling hours are Sunday, Aug. 15, from 2 to 5 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Company through the funeral home.
