Christopher J. Crowell, 86

READSBORO, Vt. - Christopher Jerome Crowell, 86, of 2877 West Hill Drive died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Born in Adams, Mass., on Dec. 19, 1923, son of Christopher and Christine Bryn Crowell, he attended Plainfield, Mass., schools and Smith Vocational Technical School in Northampton, Mass. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 275th Infantry Regiment and participated in battles of Naples-Foggia, Rome and Arno, Southern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He also received the Silver Star; Croix de Guerre; European-African and Middle East Campaign Ribbon with a Bronze Service Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant on Oct. 22, 1945. Mr. Crowell was employed as a carpenter with Fred Squirt in Wilmington for about 20 years until his retirement. Before that, he worked at the former Arnold Print Works in Adams, at Hathaway Lumber in Monroe, Mass., for the Town of Readsboro and at the former Readsboro Chair Factory. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Plainfield. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 29, the South Readsboro Community Club and the Readsboro Fire Department. He enjoyed working on tractors. His wife, the former Rachel Alta Priest, whom he married on May 21, 1949, in Adams, died on Oct. 6, 1960. He leaves a daughter, Eunice C. Crowell, with whom he resided; a brother, Harold Crowell of Plainfield; a brother-in-law, Norman Nye of Ashfield, Mass., and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. His sister, Betty Nye, and nephew William Nye are deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE - A graveside service with military honors for Mr. Crowell will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. in South Readsboro Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
