Leon M. Beverly, 86
STAMFORD, Vt. — Leon Murray Beverly, 86, of Main Road died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, while doing something he loved - riding his bicycle. Mr. Beverly was a former selectman and School Board member.
Born in North Adams, Mass., July 6, 1926, son of Leo and Eva Thompson Beverly, he attended Williamstown schools, graduating from the former Williamstown High School. He later attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., graduating as a mechanical engineer in 1951.
A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy in 1944.
Mr. Beverly was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. for more than 40 years.
He was active in Stamford Community Church, serving as trustee, and was a lifetime deacon. He was a lifelong multi-sport athlete and adventurer. He traveled the country exploring nature and conquering high peaks. He trained and competed throughout his life and won many running, cycling and triathlon events and was a recent gold medalist at the Vermont Senior Games. He also was a unicyclist and participated for many years in the Fall Foliage Festival Parade in North Adams, Mass., with his friends and family. He was an inspiration to his family and all who knew him.
He leaves his beautiful wife of 60 years, the former Marion Lois Pierce; three daughters, Diane Beverly of North Adams, Judith Creeron and her husband, John, of South Huntington, N.Y., and Christine Pulver and her husband, Al, of Ossipee, N.H.; two sons, Dale Beverly and his wife, Bonnie, of Golden, Colo., and Glenn Beverly and his wife, Mary, of Clarksburg; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his brother, Nelson Beverly, and his sister, Constance Smith.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Beverly will be Thursday, Aug. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at Stamford Community Church. Burial will be at a later date in Millard Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stamford Community Church or the Sierra Club in care of the funeral home.
