GREENFIELD, Mass. -- On Monday, the McCann Tech girls' soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, losing 4-0 at home to St. Joe's. One day later, the Hornets got right back to their winning ways, using a goal by freshman Monique Martel in the 72nd minute to clinch a 2-1 victory at Franklin Tech.

Martel's goal off of a pass from senior forward Mary Nguyen helped McCann improve its record to 8-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in Tri-County League play. The Hornets can clinch a berth in the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament on Thursday with a win at home against Pathfinder. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Mike Dowling's club outshot the Eagles 13-6 in the match but trailed early on when Mackenzie Coburn scored on a penalty kick to give Franklin a 1-0 lead 12 and half minutes into the game. It was the only goal allowed by McCann goalie Alex Wood, who made five saves in net to pick up the win.

Nguyen tied the game in the 31st minute, though, finishing off a pass from junior Eileen Zajac. Led by the strong play of junior Danielle Gibeau, the Hornets' defense sealed the win by shutting Franklin out in the second half.
