Ross, Wells Win Titles, Mount Greylock Relay Sets Sectional Meet Record

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Lilliana Wells and Madison Ross each won a sectional title, and the Mount Greylock 4-by-800 relay quartet set a meet record as the Mounties finished third at the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Track and Field Championships at Fitchburg State University.
 
Wells won the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes, 19.27 seconds, more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Jocelyn Rondeau of South Hadley (2:24.88).
 
Ross, a sophomore, won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 8-1/2 inches.
 
She also placed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.07 seconds. Bromfield's Chloe Alfieri won the event in 12.22, beating her own meet record set last year at the event.
 
Mount Greylock's 2-mile relay quartet clocked a time of 9:48.06 -- more than six seconds ahead of the field and more than three seconds better than the previous record, 9:51.24, set last year by Littleton.
 
Wells' sister, Jackie, a Mount Greylock freshman, was fifth in the mile in 5:23.31, and Maddie Albert was fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:08.51) for Mount Greylock.
 
Bromfield won the girls team title Saturday with 63.5 points, 4.5 points ahead of runner-up South Hadley. Mount Greylock finished with 48 points. Wahconah was 10th out of 41 schools scoring with 23 points.
 
In the boys meet, the top team finisher was Mount Greylock in 12th place with 21 points. The team title went to Ayer-Shirley with 78.
 
Mount Greylock's Owen Brandriss and Josh Cheung placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800 meters and mile run.
 
In the 800, Brandriss' time of 2:03.51 was about six seconds off the pace set by Ayer-Shirley's Trevor Fields, who came within eight-tenths of Connor Meehan's 2017 meet record with a time of 1:57.66.
 
In the mile, Nico Agosta of Parker Charter won in 4:31.33. Cheung was fifth in 4:36.76.
 
Mount Greylock's 4-by-800 relay finished fifth in 8:34.10, and its mile relay was sixth in 3:39.64. Mount Greylock senior Ric Donati was fourth in the pentathlon.
 
The top finish for a Berkshire County boy on Saturday belonged to Wahconah's Matthew Lighten in the 200 meters. His time of 21.80 would have been a meet record, but he finished second to Oakmont's John Cauette, the defending sectional champ, who bettered his own meet record by more than half a second, finishing in 21.76.
 
Caouette pulled off the 100-200 double, winning the 100 dash in 10.92.
 
On the girls side, Wahconah freshman Haley Crosier finished third in the 800 in 2:25.97, and Victoria Gamberoni was third in the 2-mile run in 11:55.32.
 
Wahconah's Jessica Anderson was fifth in the long jump (17-2) and sixth in the triple jump (35-0). Anderson also placed sixth in the girls pentathlon, where teammate Hailey Pickard was eighth.
 
Monument Mountain's girls got a second place finish from their 4-by-400 relay team, whose 4:09.47, was second to Bromfield's 4:07.06. The Spartans' Meri Powell was fifth in the 400 meters (1:00.96).
 
In the high jump, Monument's Fiona Horan and Gracie O'Brien finished fifth and sixth, respectively, each clearing 5 feet.
 
Monument Mountain's boys finished fourth in the mile relay, finishing in 3:38.32.
 
Taconic took home a silver medal in the boys high jump, where Josh Tayi cleared 6-0. Mohammed Ahmed was fifth for Taconic in the triple jump (42-3.5).
 
Taconic's girls were led by Lily Lobovits, who finished 10th in the shot put (30-9.75) and 11th in the discus (87-2).
 
Drury's Laura Thomas, the only Blue Devil in the field, was a third-place finisher in the javelin with a mark of 108-2.
 
Hoosac Valley's boys were strong in the throws, with Joe Delmolino placing fifth in the discus (116-8) and Dom Acquista finishing fourth in the shot put (42-5.25).
 
For Lenox, eighth-grader Mary Elliot impressed in the 400, where she finished fourth in 1:00.82. The Millionaires' girls 4-by-800 relay finished third in 10:08.47.
 
On the boys side, Lenox's Shane Steinman tied for fifth in the high jump after clearing 5-10.
