Mount Greylock Boys Edge Monument Mountain in Tiebreak in Cross Country Opener

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Jude Bakija placed 10th to give the Mount Greylock boys cross country team the tie-breaker in its season-opening meet against Monument Mountain.
 
The teams were knotted, 28-28, after the first five finishers were tallied, but Bakija, who ran a time of 21 minutes. 1.65 seconds, finished just less than two seconds ahead of the Spartans' sixth finisher.
 
In the girls race, the Mounties won in a runaway with Katherine Swann (21:03.83) taking first place overall in a 16-45 team win for Mount Greylock.
 
Monument Mountain's boys took home the top two positions in their race.
 
Keegan Leach (17:25.76) was first, and Peter LaRochelle (17:54.45) placed second for the Spartans.
 
Mount Greylock's top finisher was Oliver Swabey (18:26.36) in third place overall.
 
Backing up Swann in the girls race for the Mounties were Jacqueline Wells, Grace Malone, Lily McDermott and Anne Miller, who finished second, third, fourth, and sixth, respectively.
 
Breaking up Mount Greylock's try for a perfect 15 was Monument Mountain's Eliza Phillip, who placed fifth overall with a time of 23:28.95.
 
Mount Greylock goes to Mount Everett on Oct. 10 while Monument Mountain travels to Wahconah.
