ADAMS. Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley softball team started off their spring break with a splash on Monday, smacking 16 hits to defeat Renaissance 18-6 at home and improve their overall record to 4-0.

Senior captain Karli Schrade led the Hurricanes' impressive offensive effort, going 4 for 5 with five RBI. She had an RBI single in the third inning, an RBI triple in the sixth inning and three-run homer in the fifth inning, which helped the hosts build an insurmountable 14-5 lead.

Senior captain Sam Howe went 2 for 2 with two RBI on the day, while Sabrina Sommer went 3 for 4 with four runs scored. Freshman Kassanda Kazimierczak continued her hot start to the season. In addition to reaching base all four times she came to bat, Kazimierczak also hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.

"Our team's hitting definitely came alive today," Hoosac head coach Morgan Shafer said. "We let our relief pitcher Ashley Ciepiela pitch starting in the third inning. Our defense made some errors, but she did a good job for us today, getting five strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs in her varsity debut."

Senior Amanda Meczywor started the game and struck out three batters through two scoreless innings. Ciepiela came in with a comfy 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning and pitched well enough over the final five innings to earn her first varsity win with the Hurricanes.

Hoosac's undefeated record will be put to the test on Wednesday, when the 'Canes play a talented Wahconah team on the road at 1 p.m.
