Schooners Hand SteepleCats Sixth Loss
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mystic Schooners brought a cold ocean breeze to North Adams Thursday Night, blowing by the SteepleCats and handing North Adams their sixth loss this season.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, the SteepleCats feel behind in the 5th and never recovered, losing to the Mystic Schooners by the score of 6-2.
AJ Landis made the start for the SteepleCats, throwing six innings where the most damage from the Schooners wasn’t done until late into his night. The Colorado Mesa University senior held Mystic scoreless in the first three innings, yet in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings the Schooners were able to get a total of four runs across the plate, with the biggest contribution coming off a 2 run Chris Winkel home run to deep center field.
Four SteepleCat pitchers took the mound Thursday night in addition to Landis. Recently added Rowan University teammates Danny Serreino and Andrew DiPiazza both made their first appearances in SteepleCat blue and white, firing from the mound and only allowing a combined two hits.
Most of North Adams’ hits came off of Mystic’s starting pitcher Kumar Nambiar of Yale, yet only one run crossed the plate in his six innings on the hill. Ian Halpin and Eli Kimbell also saw the mound for the Schooners, only allowing a combined two hits and one run.
Merrimack College’s Joe Porricelli roped together a big double after being subbed in late in the game to later score the Steeplecats’ second run and add some confidence for the team looking forward.
“Late in the game down five, I just wanted to get on base and try to start a little rally and see what we could do from there” said Porricelli.
The third baseman also made outstanding plays in the field as he has been adjusting to the ball’s tendencies in the thick Joe Wolfe Field grass.
“You never want to let the ball play you” said Porricelli. “Our pitchers were doing a good job of getting weak contact so it helps us out”.
The SteepleCats are on the road Friday and Saturday night, taking on the Sanford Mainers and then the Keene Swampbats. They return home Sunday for a 4:30 Father’s Day game against the Vermont Mountaineers.
