As a reporter who was the first Latina in many newsrooms, Maria Hinojosa dreamt of a space where she could create independent, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. To that end, in 2010, she created the Futuro Media Group, an independent nonprofit organization based in Harlem, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world.

As the Anchor and Executive Producer of the Peabody Award winning show Latino USA, distributed by NPR, as well as Co-Host of In The Thick, Futuro Media’s new political podcast, Hinojosa has informed millions about the changing cultural and political landscape in America and abroad. Hinojosa is also Anchor and Executive Producer of the PBS show America By The Numbers, the first national television series to examine our country’s dramatic demographic shifts, and Humanizing America, a digital video series that deconstructs stereotypes about the American electorate. Hinojosa is also a new contributor to the long running award-winning news program CBS Sunday Morning, and is a frequent guest on MSNBC.

This program creates community gardens and helps individuals enjoy better nutrition by growing their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This program has made great strides in bringing the community together to address the needs of our community.
The Growing Healthy Garden Program has also helped create the North Adams Public School Service-Learning garden program, “Garden Mosaics.” Students are able to grow food and donate their harvest to the free community meals at the Berkshire Food Project and to Holy Family Terrace, senior living apartments, all while engaging in school curriculum topics independently from the classroom.

Arts in Recovery for Youth is an art and skills based suicide prevention program for youth ages 13-24. We learn skills through art-making (DBT, social skills, youth empowerment) and have community events. Expanding on ideas presented in her recently published book "Whitewalling: Art, Race and Protest in 3 Acts," join Aruna D'Souza for a free, public lecture at MCLA Design Lab (49 Main St.) The talk will be followed by a Q+A session.

Aruna D'Souza writes about modern and contemporary art; intersectional feminisms and other forms of politics; and how museums shape our views of each other and the world. Her work appears regularly in 4Columns.org, where she is a member of the editorial advisory board, and has been published as well in The Wall Street Journal, CNN.com, Art News, Garage, Bookforum, Momus, Art in America, and Art Practical, among other places. Her book, Whitewalling: Art, Race, and Protest in 3 Acts was published by Badlands Unlimited in May 2018.
