QuestionIm doing a project on the north adams school systems, and i was wondering if you had any information, or whre i might be able to find some, about statistics of the elementary schools cumulitave GPA's over the past twenty or so years.
AnswerThe two places to start are the school itself and the state department of education. The DOE has a great website, with lots of information, although it takes time to sort through. www.doe.mass.edu/

QuestionCan you tell me where the Pittsfield High "Generals" gets their name?
AnswerI believe the PHS team was named in honor of General Electric, the company that provided thousands of local jobs in its day. I wonder why the Lenox high school team is named The Millonaires?

Questionwhy can't north adams bring back amatuer boxing to the area??it use to be a big hit when al romano was fighting//i remember the fights at the armory and at noel field
AnswerGood idea. From what I understand, the Berkshires was once a bigtime boxing hotspot. The Berkshire Eagle has done some good features on the local boxing history. I don't know if you realize this, but I coulda' been a contendah' myself

QuestionPaul,
Hello. I am from the South and will be moving to Pittsfield this fall. I know the North gets a lot of snow. So what vehicles would you recommend for someone unfamiliar with the area and weather conditions? Also, I am not quite 5ft tall so I don't want to get a really big vehicle that would be hard to navigate in. Thank you for your time.
AnswerWe all drive dog sleds here in the winter time. Just kidding! You're in luck, it seems like nearly every auto manufacturer is making small SUV's like the Toyota Rav-4 or Subaru Outback. And really, a lot of people get around even without 4-wheel drive, although I'd reccommend at least a good front-wheel-drive model

QuestionIs fish pond haunted with a figure of a woman walking the pond on Halloween night?
AnswerI've heard that legend, but I thought it was Cheshire Lake that was haunted. I think the story is about an Indian Brave and his lover, who were killed. Sometimes they are both seen in a canoe, sometimes, she walks alone, searching...

Questionhow do I get info on concerts & plays in the Lenox area during the month of July---thanks
AnswerKeep an eye on the iBerkshires.com calendar. Also, visit the individual venues; most have thier full season schedules posted online

QuestionPaul,
A good tour guide at Tanglewood could give you the history of the property, which in 1934 & 1935 hosted performances by the New York Philharmonic in what was called the Berkshire Symphonic Festival. In 1936 Serge Koussevitzky and the BSO took over. This info might help in identifying and dating that person's bronze bookends.
AnswerThanks for the tip. You're right, many of the tour guides have been on the job for years and are a wealth of information

QuestionCoca Cola ledge got its name because the Coke logo was painted on it many years ago. It was still barely visible from Noel Field in the late '40s-early '50'
AnswerMany people still remember the Coca Cola image that gave the ledge its name

QuestionIs North Adams and Mass MOCA available via public transportation?
AnswerThe Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) offers countywide service, with several stops in North Adams. Schedules are posted at bus stops or call the BRTA

QuestionPaul,
Wondering why you didn't direct the person who wanted to know about the Hoosac Tunnel down to the Historic Park where their is a great display; along with the bldg.that has incredible history by our own Historic Society?
AnswerGood point...

QuestionHi..I asked a question awhile back and still have not gotten a response..I was wondering how the Coca-Cola Ledge on Curran Highway got its name and the history of it..
tks
AnswerCoca Cola Ledge, once called Witt's Ledge, offers a great vantage point to view the city. For many years, it's been famous as a graffiti target for MCLA's student organizations. It's fascinating how people in school enjoy showing how studid they are, perhaps trying to justify the large sums spent to educate them. Recently, MCLA and Adelphia, which owns the property, have tried to clamp down on trespassers. If any of our readers has info on how the ledge got its current name, please let us know!

QuestionThey say theres a haunted mansion owned by a family in North Adams. I would like to know if its true and where this mansion is thanks
AnswerIf you dare...copy and paste this link into your address bar. It's an article on Five Haunted Places in the Berkshire Hills, including, probably, the mansion you're talking about, the former Houghton Mansion, now a Masonic Lodge. http://www.iberkshires.com/story.php?story_id=12499

QuestionWhere can I find a comprehensive listing of any high-tech companies in the Berkshires?
AnswerStart with the countywide Berkshire Chamber of Commerce (www.berkshirechamber.com). You should also contact bTech (www.btechonline.org) which has compiled a lot of interesting information about the region's tech industry

QuestionWhy can't I find City Hall on your site? I am trying to find out how to get some information on "Sole Proprietorship"...
AnswerYou can contact the North Adams City Hall at 413-662-3014 and Pittsfield at 413-499-9361. Neither city government has much of a web presence at this time.
