Passenger Killed When Sedan Flips in Lenox Downtown

LENOX, Mass. — An elderly woman from the state of Florida was killed Wednesday afternoon after the car she was riding in collided three other vehicles, traveled through the Walker and Main street intersection and flipped over to land on the lawn of Adams Community Bank.

Nancy Goessel, 88, of Naples, Fla., was extricated using a Jaws of Life and was transported to Berkshire Medical Center  in Pittsfield, where she was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m.

Senior Officer Timothy Sheehan and Officers Jacob Stringer and William Colvin were awaiting shift change at the Lenox Police Station at 2:13 on Wednesday afternoon when they were alerted to a loud crash at the intersection of Walker Street (Route 183) and Main Street at the Paterson-Egleston Monument.

According to police, a preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2011 Jaguar 4D sedan, operated by 88-year-old William Goessel of Naples, was westbound on Walker Street and swerved into an eastbound Ford Explorer, operated by Robert Rodgers of Monterey.

Goessel then sideswiped an occupied, but parked 2012 Volkswagen Jetta and continued westbound on Walker Street in the eastbound lane while accelerating.

The Jaguar travelled over the curb and lawn at the Revolutionary War obelisk and onto the north side of the monument with such force that it was propelled into the air at some points.  The Jaguar, while airborne, then collided with a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta operated by Jorja Flaherty of Pittsfield that was carrying an infant passenger properly secured in a carseat in the rear seat.

The Jaguar landed near the sidewalk at Adams Community Bank, flipped and landed on its roof on the bank's lawn. William and Nancy Goessel were the only passengers in the Jaguar. William Goessel, Flaherty, and the infant were also transported to Berkshire Medical Center.  All victims were transported by three ambulances from the County Ambulance service.

The Lenox Police were assisted by the Lenox Fire Department, the Lee and Stockbridge police departments, state police from the Lee barracks, the State Police Crime Scene Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and several witnesses and bystanders who were at the scene.

This case remains under investigation and, currently, there are no criminal charges.

Driver Suffers 'Traumatic' Injuries in Pittsfield Crash With Tractor Trailer

Staff Reports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A collision between a pick-up truck and a tractor-trailer caused "traumatic" injuries to one driver.

Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Garner said firefighters from both Pittsfield and Dalton had to extricate the driver of a Toyota Tacoma Wednesday morning after the collision at the intersection of East Street and Hubbard Avenue.

"Upon arrival we found a two-vehicle collision had occurred with the operator of a light duty pick-up still entrapped in his vehicle. Pittsfield Fire, assisted by Dalton Fire, worked together and successfully extricated the driver from the vehicle," Garner wrote in a report issued Wednesday morning.

"It is early in the investigation but it is believed the driver sustained non-life threatening injuries."

The driver of the tractor-trailer appeared uninjured and refused treatment, the deputy chief wrote.

The accident occurred around 7:11 a.m. and the intersection, which is a four-way signalized intersection with East, Hubbard, Dalton Division and Dalton's South Street. Pittsfield Police issued a Facebook notification at 7:20 a.m. asking residents to avoid the area while Police, Fire, and EMS attended to the scene.

North Adams Police Seeking Information on Break-Ins

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Police Department is asking for assistance in investigating a number of break-ins in the Church Street area after another home was robbed Tuesday afternoon.

According to the department, it is working closely with the campus police at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Campus Police on multiple reports of homes burglarized in the areas around Church Street and Ashland Street.

"We would like to reach out to anyone who lives in the area that may have seen our possible suspects or who has video surveillance on their home," the department requested on its Facebook page.

On Tuesday, money and two televisions were taken from a home between noon and 1 p.m.

Two individuals possibly involved are described as white men standing 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9. One was wearing dark jeans, dark long-sleeve shirt and a ball cap. The second  was wearing orange or red shorts and a white T-shirt, and had facial stubble and blonde or red hair with a recent close crew cut.

They were last seen running in the area of Hoosac Hall at MCLA off Highland Avenue.

There was a separate report of a home having been entered on Elmwood Avenue sometime between Aug. 17 and Aug. 18 when a television was taken.

Police are asking homeowners to not publicly disclose that they have knowledge of the incidents or that they may have footage of the individuals but to contact the North Adams Police Department and request to speak with an officer.
