Pittsfield YMCA, Healthy Backs program

The Pittsfield Family YMCA announces open registrations for its Healthy Backs program designed to help those with chronic back pain by stretching and strengthening the back to help relieve and prevent lower back pain. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 21-Aug. 27, 8-9 a.m. with mandatory free orientations on either July 7 at 6 p.m. or July 9 at 8 a.m.

Through proper breathing techniques, participants will learn how to strengthen, relax and stretch major muscles that support the spine. Exercises will start with gentle stretches and then move to more challenging positions. Targeted muscle groups include the abdominal, upper and lower back, thigh, hamstring hip flexors and chest.

Mandatory FREE orientations: Tuesday, July 7, 6 p.m. or Thursday, July 9, 8 a.m. The series is held Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 21-Aug. 27, 8-9 a.m. Cost: Members: $20. Non-members: $50. Visit the Y to sign up. Bring comfortable clothes and a towel to class.

Pittsfield YMCA, Ys youth swim lessons

The Pittsfield Family YMCA announces open registrations for its shortened summer youth swim lessons in Central Berkshire County’s largest indoor swimming pool. Lessons are for all boys and girls 6 months to 12 years old. Sessions run for 4 weeks with half-hour lessons weekly. Classes meet July 11-Aug. 1.

Swim categories are based on age and ability:

1. Our Parent/Child Level (children 6 months to 3 years old) allows a child to grow comfortable in the water with a parent.

2. Our Pike Level (children 3-5 years old) is for beginner swimmers who need a floatation device. A swim bubble is required.

3. Our Eel Level (children 3-5 years old) is for children who are comfortable in the water and need little to no assistance with floatation.

4. Our Polliwog Level (children ages 6-12 years old) is for beginner swimmers who need a floatation device. A swim bubble is required.

5. Our Guppy Level (children ages 6-12 years old) is for children who are comfortable in the water, need little to no assistance with floatation. To participate in this level, children need to be able to demonstrate alternating arm action.

6. Our Minnow Level (children 6-12 years old) is for children who can swim a half lap confidently and are able to float without assistance. Children will learn stroke development and increasing endurance in this level.

7. Our Fish/Flying Fish Level (children 6-12 years old) is for children who want to learn how to refine performance with rhythmic breathing. Strokes, turns and diving levels will be taught. Children must already know how to swim a full lap confidently.

Classes meet Saturdays from July 11-Aug. 1. Times are below.

Parent/Child (6 mos. to 3 yrs.): Sat., 8:30-9 a.m.
Pike (3-5 years old):  Sat., 9-9:30 a.m.
Eel (3-5 years old):  Sat., 9:30-10 a.m.
Polliwog (6-12 year-old beginners): Sat., 10-10:30 a.m.
Guppy (6-12 years old): Sat., 10:30-11 a.m.
Minnow (6-12 years old): Sat., 11-11:30 a.m.
Fish/Flying Fish (6-12 yrs. old): Sat., 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

To register, visit the Y or go to www.pittsfieldfamilyymca.org. Swim lessons cost $30. All participants must also be Y members. An annual youth membership is $36. Swim bubbles can be purchased at the Y for $10, plus tax. All swim lessons take place at the Y’s indoor swimming pool. Parents are asked to watch from the pool balcony.

Dalton Community Recreation Association , Fitness Boot Camp

The Dalton Community Recreation Association announces registration for the summer session of Fitness Boot Camp, which runs from July 16 – October 22, 2015.

The Fitness Boot Camp at the CRA is the longest running fitness boot camp in the Berkshires. Since its first session, hundreds of folks from around the area enlisted and participated. In it’s 13th year, instructors Rob Giuliani and Mike Whitehouse hold classes on Monday and Thursday mornings from 5:30 am – 6:30 am and on Friday mornings from 5:45 am – 6:15 am. Monday and Thursday classes emphasize strength and overall conditioning. Activities are designed to build core strength and muscular and cardio endurance. Friday classes are 30 minutes of cardio. Men and Women are welcome to join. Participants of all ages (16 and up) and capabilities are encouraged to join. Our instructors will modify the exercises to fit your needs.

Member cost is $175. Cost for non-members is $220. Register at the Dalton CRA, 400 Main Street, Dalton, MA.

Pittsfield YMCA, Register for the Ys Saints Football League

The Pittsfield Family YMCA is now accepting registrations for its traveling football league for new and returning players, ages 7-14 years old. The league begins Aug. 10. All players must register before Aug. 10.

Children will learn teamwork, sportsmanship values and the skills and rules of the game in this competitive program. The Y’s teams will play other teams throughout Berkshire County.

Three divisions are available: The Peewee division is for ages 7-9 years old. Eligibility for 7 year olds will be based on Coach/Delegate evaluation to be completed by the end of the first week of practice. The Juniors division is for ages 10-11 years old and 12 year olds under 85 lbs, not turning 13 before the end of the calendar year. The Seniors division is for 12-13 years old or 14 years old if in the 8th grade, not turning 15 before the end of the calendar year. Date of birth cutoff for all players is August 31.

The cost of the league is $100, which includes a $36 annual youth membership and $64 program registration fee. Register at the Y, 292 North Street, Pittsfield starting June 15. No refunds after the second week of practice.
