“First Friday” Celebration

By Susan Bush
12:00AM / Thursday, August 04, 2005

North Adams – The city’s downtown is set to showcase art, music and a free family film during an Aug. 5 “First Friday” celebration.

Main Street’s two newest art galleries, Gallery 51 and the Main Street Art Gallery plan to welcome visitors during the 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. event. At “Gallery 51,” a music performance is on the agenda, and on display are the works of several local artists. Gallery 51 opened last month as a collaboration between the City of North Adams, local business leaders, and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts; MCLA students staff the gallery from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

The Main Street Art Gallery also opened last month, and features the work of Terrence Tiernan, Doreen Jones Tiernan, Matthew Tiernan, and Jay Tiernan. Tiernan family art features an exciting use of color. The gallery is situated on the street’s eastern end near the historic Mohawk Theater marquee.

The movie “Two Brothers” is slated to begin at dusk on the lawn of the First Congregational Church at 134 Main St.. The film delves into the lives of two tiger siblings who are separated at birth and are reunited years later under challenging circumstances.

Music will highlight the evening at Papyri Books, 49 Main St. Musician Rick Powers Ward will present a musical buffet featuring classic oldies, New Orleans-style Americana, country and blues, with a dash of New Folk and Irish tunes. Berkshire artist Grier Horner’s “Siberian Express” art exhibit remains on display at the bookstore. Refreshments are part of the celebration.

Live music from India performed on the tabla and sitar are the planned attractions at a 28 Holden St. shop. The Legacy store has also scheduled free hands-on crafts for children.

Special sales will be offered at Sports Corner, a store located at the corner of Holden and Main streets.

For those who want to experience some extra hours of shopping or browsing, numerous shops on Main, Holden, and Eagle streets plan to keep their doors open during the celebration.

“First Friday” events are held on the first Friday of the month, and organizers are interested in fresh ideas and participation from new venues.
