New Officers Sworn In

By Susan Bush
12:00AM / Thursday, December 08, 2005

North Adams - Mayor John Barrett III officially welcomed three new full-time police officers to the city police department during a Dec. 8 swearing-in ceremony at City Hall.

Police Officers Mark Bailey, Ignacio Matos and Erik Thomas were also welcomed by Commissioner of Public Safety E. John Morocco, police Director Michael Cozzaglio, and police Lt. David Sacco.

Bailey, Thomas and Matos have all served as reserve officers for about one year or longer, and Barrett noted that all three performed extremely well in the reserve capacity.

“They’ve all done an outstanding job,” Barrett said. “We are very excited about their future.”

Family members stood by proudly as the swearing in began; Matos’ parents Ignacio and Maria Matos, Bailey’s parents Stephen and Marianne Bailey, and Thomas’ wife Angela Thomas, daughters Casey and Vanessa Thomas, and his mother Donna Thomas all showed smiles and a few tears as the trio solemnly accepted responsibility to protect and serve city residents.

The addition of Matos, Bailey, and Thomas to the department brings the total full-time city police officers to 22, said Cozzaglio. The new officers bring their capabilities to a professional, well-run police department, he said.

“They are welcome assets to the police department,” Cozzaglio said. “They are all educated, dedicated, and motivated young officers.”
