Fire Displaces North Adams Residents

Fire displaces many residents in this Washington Ave. building
North Adams – An early morning Feb. 1 fire heavily damaged a three-story building at the corner of Washington Avenue and Spring Street, and left numerous people without a place to call home.

City firefighters remained at the fire scene as of 5:30 a.m., said city fire department Lt. David “Dewey” Kennedy during a telephone interview.

Firefighters were called to the building just before 1 a.m., and found flames burning along the second and third floors. Flames were beginning to burn through the structure roof, Kennedy said.

“The fire had a jump on us,” Kennedy said. “I don’t know right now just how many people are displaced but I know it’s a bunch.”

A second alarm was issued and all off-duty city firefighters were called to the scene. Firefighters from Clarksburg, Williamstown, and Adams were also called to the scene to as part of a mutual aid agreement. Manpower and specific firefighting equipment from the mutual aid departments were called into action at the scene.

The structure sustained significant fire, smoke, and water damage, Kennedy said.

Kennedy said he believes that the building’s residents were able to escape without injury and as of 5:30 a.m., no firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Additional information about the fire may be available later in the day.
