New Trustees At Clark Art

12:00AM / Tuesday, March 07, 2006

Williamstown - José Enrique Fernández of San Juan, Puerto Rico and Martha Berman Lipp of New York, NY have been appointed trustees of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute.

Fernández and Lipp join the board at an important time in the Clark's development - the culmination of its exciting 50th anniversary season of exhibitions and programs, and the beginning of the first phase of the Clark's campus expansion, which starts construction this spring.

The Expansion Project, designed by architect Tadao Ando, will provide much-needed space for the Institute's special exhibitions, and research and academic programs, and will enhance the way visitors experience both art and the Clark's beautiful 140-acre campus.

Fernández is currently chairman of the board of directors of Oriental Financial Group, a position he has held since 1996. Deeply committed to public service, Fernández is also a member of the board of trustees of the University of Notre Dame, and of the YMCA Retirement Fund. In 2005 he was awarded the Cross of the Church and Pontiff by Pope John Paul II in recognition of his dedication and service over many years to social and educational organizations in Puerto Rico, the U.S. and other countries.

Lipp is the former CEO and owner of Merchants Travel Inc. and taught English at Butler University. She is a trustee of The Children's Aid Society of New York, and active in the New York City ballet. Lipp's record of public service includes membership on the executive committee of the prestigious International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and on the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Indianapolis.

"The Clark is extremely fortunate to have two people with José and Martha's deep commitment to the arts and education join the board at this time," said Peter S. Wilmott, board president. "Their enthusiasm and dedication to the Clark and its mission will help us to reach our plans for the future."

The Clark

Set amidst 140 bucolic acres in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, the Clark is an art museum and a center for research and higher education, dedicated to advancing and extending the public understanding of art. The Clark's research and academic programs include an international fellowship program and regular conferences, symposia, and colloquia.

The Clark, together with Williams College, jointly sponsors one of the nation's leading master's programs in art history and encompasses one of the most comprehensive art history libraries in the world. Its Fellows and Conference Programs draw university and museum professionals from around the world.

The Clark campus is also home to the Williamstown Art Conservation Center, the nation's largest member-supported regional facility for the restoration of works of art.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID.
