Louis P. Angeli, 79

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Louis Peter Angeli, 79, of 97 Front St. died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at North Adams Regional Hospital, after being stricken earlier at home. Born in Adams on Sept. 1, 1924, son of Joseph and Maria Santorum Angeli, he was educated in North Adams schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he entered the service on May 13, 1943, and was a light mortar crewman with Company I, 111th Infantry Regiment, in the Pacific theater. He participated in battles in the central and western Pacific and in the Marshall Islands and was awarded several medals. He was honorably discharged as a private, first class. Mr. Angeli was employed by the former Arnold Print Works in Adams, retiring in 1975. Prior to that, he was a member of the North Adams Police Department, and earlier had been employed by the Boston & Maine Railroad and the former Gale Shoe Co. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, a member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars. His wife, the former Elaine Arlene Benoit Nichlen, whom he married July 21, 1961, died Oct. 27, 1984. He leaves three stepdaughters, Albina Affhauser of Pittsfield, Rosetta Perras of Albany, Ore., and Deborah Nichlen of North Adams; three stepgranddaughters he raised as daughters, Rosetta Sherman and Tammy Angeli Blair, both of North Adams, and Lisa Angeli of Lewiston, Maine; two stepsons, James C. Nichlen and Frederick A. Nichlen, both of the state of Florida; a sister, Angelina Giusti of North Adams; a brother, Mario Angeli of North Adams, 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. His other brother, North Adams Police Officer George O. Angeli, died in the line of duty on July 8, 1960. FUNERAL NOTICE â€' Funeral services for Mr. Angeli will take place Wednesday, April 14, at 9:30 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Anthony's Church, with the Rev. Daniel O'Hear, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Arthritis Foundation through the funeral home.
