Emily Ida Bassett, 93
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Emily Ida Bassett, 93, of Holy Family Terrace, 611 State Road, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Williamstown Commons following a short illness.
Born in North Adams on Dec. 19, 1911, daughter of Nelson A. and Herminie Sweeney Plankey, she was educated in North Adams schools. She resided at 48 Pines Lodge Park, Cummings Avenue, Williamstown, before returning to North Adams in 1989.
Mrs. Bassett was employed in the cafeteria of the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, until retiring in 1975. She began her working career with the former Hoosac Cotton Mills.
She was a communicant of St. Raphael's Church of Williamstown.
Her husband, Leo Napoleon Bassett, whom she married July 5, 1937, died Nov. 16, 1983.
She leaves two sisters, Rita Sweeney and Lydia Camadine, both of North Adams; her sister-in-law and caregiver, Jean Reynolds Plankey of Williamstown; a niece and nephew whom she helped raise from early childhood and who assisted her as caregivers, Debra Soha and her husband, James Soha, and Timothy Plankey and his wife, Teresa Plankey, all of North Adams; other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Young, on Nov. 3, 2001, and a brother, Charles N. Plankey, on May 30, 1997.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Bassett will be Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 1:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 2 at St. Raphael's Church, Cole Avenue, Williamstown.
Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 12:15 to 1:15. In lieu of flowers, any donations in her memory are suggested for the Emily Bassett Memorial Scholarship Fund for Drury High School band members through the funeral home.
