Rita M. Sweeney, 88

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Rita Marion Sweeney, 88, of 93 Cleveland Ave., Berkshire Landings, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on July 9, 1918, daughter of Nelson A. Plankey and Hermine Sweeney Plankey, she attended Drury High School. Mrs. Sweeney was employed for 16 years as a crossing guard for the city of North Adams school system. Prior to that, she worked for several years at the former Newberry's department store and at the former Hoosac Mills. She also was employed at the North Adams Country Club. She was a longtime communicant of Notre Dame Church. She had been secretary and treasurer of the former Houghton School Parent Group and she helped to start the school's musicals. Her husband, Earl Joseph Sweeney, whom she married July 9, 1938, in Notre Dame Church, died April 16, 1984. She leaves a son, Charles "Chuck" Sweeney and his wife, Linda, of North Adams; a daughter, Donna Meranti of North Adams; a sister, Lydia Camadine of North Adams; five grandchildren, Anthony Sweeney, Michelle Masse, Steven and William Meranti, and Leisa Superneau, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings Emily Bassett, Evelyn Young and Charles Plankey. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mrs. Sweeney will take place Monday at 10:15 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling Hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial Donations are suggested for the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA, 01247.
