 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Chester Arthur Johnson, 87, of 147 North St. and formerly of Pownal, Vt., died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at North Adams Commons.
Born in North Adams on Oct. 10, 1925, son of Carl and Flora Ebert Johnson, he attended local schools.
An Air Force veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1947. He later enlisted in the Marines, serving from 1947 to 1950.
Mr. Johnson was a deputy sheriff for the Bennington County sheriff's department. He also had been caretaker of the North Adams water supply in Pownal for many years.
He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed playing cards and Bingo. He was devoted to his family.
His wife, the the former Marjorie Morrisse, whom he married on Nov. 20, 1948, died on Sept. 30, 2004.
He leaves two grandchildren, Frank Davignon and his wife, Ann of North Adams and Bobbi Jo Olver and her husband, Rob, of Uncasville, Conn., and five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Michael, Travis, Leona and Timmy.
His four children preceded him in death: Sue Davignon, Bruce Johnson, Flora Laliberte, and Carl Johnson.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Johnson will be Thursday, Feb. 21, at 10 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday from 9 to 10 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
