PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Taconic and Wahconah will meet on the gridiron Friday night as two of the top four teams in Western Massachusetts according to the weekly Western Mass High School Football Media Poll.

Wahconah (5-0) Thursday took over the top spot from Chicopee Comp (5-0) after scoring a solid win over South Hadley in Week 5.

Coach Gary Campbell’s team will put its perfect record on the line Friday night when it hosts Taconic (4-1), which checks in as the fourth-ranked team in the section in this week’s poll.

Chicopee Comp slipped one notch to No. 2 in the rankings, but it is just one point behind Wahconah, and the Colts are one of five teams earning at least one first-place vote.

Third-ranked Northampton (5-0) and No. 5 Springfield Central (3-2) are the other teams to receive one of the eight first-place votes.

All four of the top four in this week’s poll play a ranked opponent in Week 6. Besides the Taconic-Wahconah clash for Berkshire County bragging rights, Chicopee Comp plays No. 7 Agawam (4-1), and Northampton plays No. 6 Westfield (4-1).

Turners Falls (5-0) and Mount Greylock (5-0) make their debuts in the top 10 this week, checking in at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively. Turners’ next test is Franklin Tech; the Mounties have a league game at Mohwak Trail on Friday night.

Rounding out the top 10 is South Hadley (3-2), which looks to recover from last week’s loss in Dalton by taking on Pittsfield.

The poll, organized by the Berkshire Eagle, includes representatives from the Greenfield Recorder, Daily Hampshire Gazette, Berkshire Courier and iBerkshires.com.
