Athletes of the Week: Dumas & Pecor

Katie Dumas
Wahconah

Wahconah had a great season just to get to the semi-final game of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament, and for a while it looked like that was as far as it would get. Then Katie Dumas had something to say. Dumas scored in the closing minutes to tie Wahconah's sectional semi-final with Sabis, and the team went on to win that game and the Western Mass title before bowing out in this week’s state semi-finals.

"We knew time was running out, but we weren't backing down," Dumas said later. Wahconah did not back down from too many challenges this year. It won 17 times in 22 outings and lost just three times, including the state playoffs. This week, Dumas was one of four Wahconah players named first-team all-league by the Berkshire County North division coaches.

Brett Pecor
McCann Tech

Rushing for 100 yards was hardly unusual for McCann Tech senior Brett Pecor this fall. He just usually did it in the first half. He watched a lot of second half action from the sidelines as the Hornets ran up an 8-0 regular season record. In Saturday's Western Massachusetts Division 6 championship game, Pecor was on the field until the final whistle and leading McCann to the state semi-finals.

Pecor rushed for more than 100 yards and scored a fourth-quarter TD in McCann's 13-6 victory of Turners Falls that gave the Hornets their first Western Mass championship in school history. On Saturday, McCann will look for another first — the first state championship game appearance for the program — when it travels to Leominster to take on Central Mass champion Littleton.

iBerkshires Sports and Capital Region Honda Dealers, including Bedard Honda in Cheshire, will be spotlighting two Berkshire County high school athletes each week, a boy and a girl, who best excelled in their sport or boosted their teams' efforts.
