Two Taconic Wrestlers Reach State Semi-Finals

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Taconic’s Isiah Williams and Zabion Powell are through to Saturday’s semi-finals at the Massachusetts Division 3 Wrestling Championships.
 
Williams and Powell each advanced on Friday to help Taconic into 11th place in the 55-team field.
 
At 152 pounds, Williams pinned Essex’s Nicholas Walker in 5 minutes, 33 seconds in the first round before beating Foxboro’s Max Dorman, 12-5, in the quarters. On Saturday, he will face Wayland’s Brendan Kiernan for a berth in the finals.
 
At 132, Powell has not allowed a point in a pair of wins. In his opener, he beat Canton’s Anis Chakir, 4-0. Then he knocked off Jake Goodchild from host Wakefield, 10-0. In the semis, Powell faces Foxboro’s Matt Kelley.
 
Western Mass champion Monument Mountain is in 22nd place after one day.
 
The Spartans have one wrestler alive in the championship bracket. Nate Cormier at 145 will face Essex’s Jackson Leete in Saturday’s semi-final round. On Friday, Cormier pinned Ashland’s Noah Fuller midway through the second period and beat Melrose’s Mike Calvert, 6-3.
 
Mount Greylock senior Devin Pelletier cruised into the semis with a pair of relatively easy wins at 170 pounds.
 
In the first round, Pelletier pinned Nashoba’s Tom Eyles in 1:42. Then he knocked off Wilmington’s Sam Jennings, 7-0.
 
On Saturday, Pelletier will face Dedham’s Brandon Reyes in the semis.
 
Mount Everett’s Anthony Lupiani and Pat Fosby are alive in the consolation brackets at 113 and 120, respectively.
 
Melrose leads the team competition with 61 points. Wayland (52) and Foxboro (51.5) are right behind.
