BUCKLAND, Mass. – The Mount Greylock girls and boys track and field teams followed up their undefeated dual meet seasons with dominating wins at the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships at Mohawk Trail Regional High School on Friday.

Maggie Nichols and Katherine Goss paced the girls by each earning a pair of wins on the track.

Mount Greylock’s boys also had a double winner, Quinn McDermott in the 400-meter dash and the mile run en route to the program’s sixth straight Western Mass title.

Berkshire County was the big winner at the regional competition.

Thirty individual and six relay titles were awarded on Friday afternoon and evening. Athletes from county schools took home 12 first-place finishes in the girls meet and 12 in the boys for a total of 24 of 36 gold medals.

Lenox’s Alice Culver set the tone, going wire-to-wire for the day’s first title decided on the track, the 2-mile run.

“I was going into it just going for the place, not going for the time,” Culver said after defending her 2023 title in the event. “I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel, but I just wanted to go for it.

“My plan was originally not to take the lead. I kind of wanted to stay in second or with the top pack and hold back and pick it up in the second mile. The way it ended up, I got the lead from the start, which was a little bit stressful, but I just knew what I had to do. The second mile, I picked it up and tried to increase the gap.”

Culver finished 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

In addition to the two Mounties with two wins apiece, the county’s third double-winner on Friday was Monument Mountain’s Amelia Desilets, who took the mile and the 800 run.

Desilets and Nichols each also shared a relay title to add to their win collections on Friday – Desilets in the 4-by-800 and Nichols in the 4-by-100.

Friday marked the second year in a row that Nichols doubled in the 100 and 200 at Western Mass.

“I was a little unsure coming into this,” Nichols said after taking the 100 title in her last individual race of the night. “Dezerea [Powell of Pittsfield] was getting a little close. Abby [Gelinas] from Frontier was getting a little close. My plan was just to go out there, run my own race and see what I could do, and it worked out.”

Mount Greylock’s girls finished with nearly double the points of runner-up Frontier Regional.

Monument Mountain placed third in the event.

The next county finisher was Hoosac Valley, which got an individual title from Taylor Garabedian in the discus.

Other individual titlists in the girls meet included Monument Mountain’s Lily Haskins-Vaughan in the high jump and Wahconah’s Adelyn Furlong in the shot put.

In the boys meet, Mount Greylock had a more than comfortable 75-point margin over runner-up Frontier.

Backing up McDemott were three other Mounties with individual titles.

Mason Sayers won the 100 on the track and ran anchor on the Mounties’ winning 4-by-100 relay. And in the throws, Judge Martin and Jenner Kittle took the shot put and javelin, respectively.

It was a clean sweep for Berkshire County in the throws in the boys meet as Wahconah’s Payton Shippee won the discus.

Monument Mountain and Taconic each brought home a pair of individual titles.

The Spartans got wins from Everett Pacheco in the 2-mile run and Oliver Berkowitz in the long jump.

The Thunder’s Elijah Harewood won the 200 meters, and his teammate Andrew Peprah won the 400 hurdles.

Pittsfield’s boys won the mile relay.
