WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Baseball folks jokingly refer to catcher's gear as the "tools of ignorance," but there was nothing ignorant or arrogant at Mount Greylock senior Nick DiSanti.

DiSanti, a four-year starter behind the plate for the Mounties, was recognized by the Berkshire County Umpires Association with its Sportsmanship Award for the Southern Division for the 2014 season.

"It's really very well deserved," Mount Greylock coach Steve Messina said. "He's a great kid and a great leader. ... He had a calm demeanor. He respected everybody, respected the game, other players, the umpires.

"I hear from a lot of umpires who enjoyed calling a game behind him. He was always in a good frame of mind. He could have conversations with the umpire, chat about whatever.

"That speaks to his maturity."

DiSanti was a four-year starter at catcher for Mount Greylock and a captain on the 2014 squad.

He hit .359 with 20 runs batted in and two home runs. His on-base percentage was .875.

DiSanti plans to continue his baseball career as a student-athlete at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
