NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Granby boys lacrosse team Tuesday scored three goals to open the third quarter and open a 6-2 lead en route to an 8-4 win over McCann Tech.

Corey Hinkley had a hat trick for the Rams, who dropped McCann Tech to 2-3 on the season.

The Hornets failed to cash in on the momentum they generated Monday with an exciting, 16-15, win over Berkshire County rival Taconic.

“We didn't do the things we were successful with yesterday, like moving the ball and moving off the ball. There wasn't much movement without the ball at all,” McCann Tech coach Paul Lange said.

“They were pretty sore and tired from yesterday. It's a growing pain. They have to learn how to work through that. Back-to-backs are tough.”

McCann never really found its touch on offense, but it stayed in the low-scoring contest early, going to the locker room down, 3-2.

Granby drew first blood in the second minute, but Jason Delisle answered moments later when he came out from behind the goal and snuck one past Ryan Walz (12 saves).

The Rams answered when Hinkley intercepted a clearing pass and scored with 4 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first quarter, and then neither team found the back of the net for more than 15 minutes before Granby picked up an insurance goal.

McCann Tech cut the lead to 3-1 just before half-time on a hard-luck goal for Walz.

Delisle took a hard high shot on goal that caromed off Walz’ collar bone and appeared to ricochet into his throat, leaving him dazed. He went down to a knee, and the ball trickled into the goal behind him.

Walz left for the final 1:13 of the first half but returned after half-time.

Granby’s offense was firing on all cylinders for the first four minutes of the second half, putting home three straight goals to take a four-goal lead.

McCann Tech answered with two goals late in the third to get back within two, but Granby managed the only offense in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.

The Hornets had plenty of other opportunities to score -- including some prime chances on the man-up.

“We just didn't take care of the ball, kind of forced some things, and we just didn't play our game today,” Lange said. “But Granby showed up to play, and they played well. You can' take anything away from them.”

Taden Bolte made 12 saves for McCann Tech, which hosts Chicopee on Thursday.

“Today, they were the better team,” Lange said of Granby. “If we want to be successful and accomplish things like going to Western Mass and being .500, that's a team we have to play with and be able to beat.

“We have them again [May 15], and we'll do a better job.”
