NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- After falling behind 21-5 in the fifth inning and having players fall to injury, McCann softball coach Kate Galli decided Wednesday to end the game.

"At that point in the game, it was more important to live to fight another day, as hard as it is to make that decision," Galli said.

"We have been plagued by injuries in the last week alone, and couldn’t risk further injury to two of my players out in that field today. I applaud their dedication, but had to take the decision away from them in fear of more complicated, serious problems."

Cheyenne Alcombright went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, and Haley Malloy drove in a pair of runs in the first inning for McCann, which was within striking distance, 10-5, before giving up 11 runs in the top of the fifth.

Several players had multiple-hit games for Southwick, which was led by Megan Zabik, who went 4-for-4 with a double and six RBIs.

McCann (6-5) travels to Lee on Friday.
