Allan E. McLain, 89

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Allan Eugene McLain. 89, of Clarksburg died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown.

Born at his grandparents' home on Henderson Road in Williamstown on Nov. 7, 1926, a son of Forist and Edna Sweet McLain, he moved with his family at the age of 7 to Clarksburg and, in the 1950s, built the home where he would spend the rest of his life. He graduated from Drury High School in North Adams.

A Navy decorated veteran of World War II, he serve aboard the USS Savannah, USS Augusta and the USS John D. Ford. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves.  

Mr. McClain was employed for 43 years as a steam engineer in the boiler room at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. During his retirement, he worked part time at the former Shady Pines Campground in Savoy.

He was a longtime member of the local Masons. He enjoyed fly fishing and gardening.  

He and his wife, the former Blanche King, were married April 16, 1947, in North Adams.

Besides his wife of 68 years, he leaves his five loving children, four daughters, Linda Sarauer and her husband, Roger, of Fond Du Lac, Wisc., Debbie Howland and her husband, Steven, of the town of Florida, Pat McLain of Cheshire and Betsy Plante and her husband, Rick, of North Adams; a son, Allan G. McLain and his wife, Cindi, of Clarksburg; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, a niece and several nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Forist McLain Jr., and his sister, Jacqueline Quirk.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. McLain will take place Monday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial with full military honors will take in Clarksburg Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested for the Clarksburg Senior Center, where he and his wife spent time in recent years.
