George A. Roe, 93

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — George A. Roe, 93, of Williamstown died on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, surrounded by his family.

He was born the son of George A. and Mabel (Lee) Roe, on September 4, 1923, in Pawtucket, R.I. Mr. Roe served as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Force with the 456th Bomb Group, assigned to the 15th Air Force, stationed in Italy. His service to his country during WWII was very important to him and he remained close to many other Bomb Group members throughout his lifetime. He graduated from Providence College in 1949. Mr. Roe worked for the U.S. Social Security Administration from 1952 to 1981, when he retired as the Manager of the North Adams Social Security Office.

He married his wife of 55 years, Inez (Walters), on September 2, 1950. Together, George and Inez enjoyed traveling, sports, and spending time with their family. His passions were gardening, golf, and horse racing.  Mr. Roe was a fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed researching family genealogy, discussions of current events, a good mystery novel, and was a blossoming foodie.

Mr. Roe was a communicant of St. Patrick & St. Raphael Parish in Williamstown. He was predeceased by his wife Inez and his daughter Nancy Roe Beverly. 

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Roe Healy and son-in-law Henry of East Hampton, Conn.; daughter Patricia Miranda and son-in-law Michael of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter Barbara Roe Villanueva of North Adams, Mass.; daughter Alison O’Grady and son-in-law Brian of Williamstown; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth O’Grady of West Springfield, Mass., and Meghan O’Grady of Williamstown, Mass., Nathaniel Miranda and his wife Hope of Charleston, S.C., and Samantha Healy of East Hampton, Conn.

Funeral notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick and St. Raphael Church in Williamstown. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Jimmy Fund, the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, c/o Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main Street, North Adams, MA 01247.
