Dorothy Howe, 91

STAMFORD, Vt. — Dorothy Thompson Howe, 91, of Stamford, Vermont, died peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont. She had resided for several months at the Vermont Veterans Home. She was born in New Sharon, Maine, the daughter of Merle and Hazel (Brown) Thompson.
Dorothy graduated from New Sharon High School in 1952 and from the Central Maine General (now Central Maine Medical Center) School of Nursing in 1955. She worked as a hospital nurse at CMG for several years before marrying David and moving to the Berkshires. In 1964, she and David moved to Stamford, Vermont and became outstanding members of the community.
In the 1980s, Dorothy worked as a nurse at North Adams State College (now MCLA) where she tended to student ailments and provided a listening ear to those in need. Her nursing care was also extended to friends and family facing serious illnesses. She was a steadfast friend to many and could always be counted on for practical support as well as a loaf of freshly baked bread. Her baking was a gift and a comfort to all.
Dorothy was involved in many activities and rarely sat still. Those who knew her often saw her walking along Main Road and up The Lane. She would always wave and stop to chat with everyone she met—and carry biscuits for any dogs she might encounter along the way. She was a gifted correspondent and loved to send cards and letters to all she held dear. She will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Howe. Dorothy is survived by her children, Jean, John, and Jim and his wife Cathy; her five grandchildren, Emily and her husband Giuseppe, Molly, Colleen, Joshua and his late husband Ryan, and Natalie; and her great-grandson, Giuseppe.
