Born in Lakewood, Ohio, on June 5, 1904, son of Benjamin Holly Rose and Evelyn Curtiss Rose, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1923, from Williams College in 1927, and from Harvard Law School in 1930. Mr. Rose was a lawyer and foundation executive in New York City for 60 years. He began his career in 1930 at the New York law firm of Baldwin, Todd and Hutchins, where he became a partner. He became prominent both in the foundation field and as the legal adviser to several prominent families. He was a founding trustee of the Pfeiffer Foundation and assisted in the founding of Simon's Rock College in Great Barrington. He maintained some of his foundation responsibilities well into the 1990s. He was a member of the University Club and Century Association in New York City and was an honorary member of the Royal Society of Medicine in London. He collected art and antiques, and had contributed substantial collections of prints to both the Cleveland Art Institute and the museum at Williams College, where a print room was named after him. He enjoyed the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands, and donated a home he owned near Gypsy Island to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, N.Y. He leaves his wife of 72 years, the former Emily Mason; three sons, Stephen Curtiss Rose of New York City, Mason Curtiss Rose of Alford and Jonathan Holly Rose of Hanover, N.H.; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, Mass., on Saturday, March 23, at 3:30. The family has requested that there be no flowers sent, and that any contributions be given either to the Antique Boat Museum or Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, 01230, which is in charge of arrangements.
