William S. Linscott

William Sterling Linscott, 75, of 113 West Road died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after being admitted. He was a longtime Adams businessman and community leader. Born in Adams on May 3, 1925, son of Donald and Ruth Thompson Linscott, he attended local schools. He also attended the Vermont Academy, where he was a member of the ski team. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Italy, where he was wounded in action. He received the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he was a certified ski instructor at Bromley Mountain Ski Area in Vermont for five years. He then returned to Adams and joined his father in the operation of the Thompson and Linscott Insurance Agency, retiring 10 years ago. Mr. Linscott was the former local coordinator of the American Red Cross, the coordinator for the Salvation Army for Adams, Cheshire and Savoy, director of the former Civil Defense and Adams Ambulance, a director of the former First Agricultural Bank, and he was an honorary corporator of South Adams Savings Bank. A longtime civic leader, he was a member and past president of the Adams Lions Club, the Berkshire Lodge of Masons AF&AM of Adams, the Melha Temple of Shriners, Adams Post 160 American Legion, Burnette-Bednarz Post 1995 Veteran of Foreign Wars of Adams, Disabled American Veterans, the National and New England chapters of the 10th Mountain Division Association, and a longtime member of the Forest Park Club in Adams. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Adams. He leaves his wife of 49 years, the former Patricia Gilley, whom he married Nov. 24, 1951; two daughters, Heather Linscott and Robin Avery, both of Adams; a brother, Donald Linscott of Alburg, Vt., and two grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 10 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 11 in St. Mark's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Jane R. Dunning, interim rector. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home. He leaves two grandchildren, Collin Avery and Jillian Avery, both of Adams.
