William A. Burke

William A. Burke, 89, of East Falmouth, formerly of Adams, died June 18 at JML Care Center in Falmouth. Born in Springfield on Aug. 28, 1912, son of Edward and Katherine Hall Burke, he attended Springfield schools. He moved to Adams in 1951. He served in the Army during World War II and attained the rank of major. Mr. Burke began his banking career in Springfield in 1930. In 1951, he became employed as a teller at the former Greylock National Bank, rising to the position of assistant vice president in charge of the bank's Adams branch after it merged with Berkshire Bank & Trust. In 1968, he was named vice president, and later president, of First National Bank of Northampton. In 1977, he became president of Falmouth National Bank. He retired in 1986, but continued to work part time at the bank as needed. He was a communicant and eucharistic minister of St. Anthony's Church in East Falmouth. He was awarded the Marian Medal from the Fall River Diocese for work he had done in his parish. He was a former member of the Berkshire County Industrial Development Commission and the Adams School Committee, and served as treasurer of the Heart Fund and Cancer Crusade. He leaves his wife of 58 years, the former R. Annette Illgen, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Michele Conte.
