Margaret E. Drake

Margaret E. Drake, 85, of 1 Maple St. died Wednesday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee. Born in Pittsfield on April 23, 1917, daughter of Francis and Ruby Farley Curley, she attended local schools and was a 1935 graduate of Commerce High School in Springfield. After graduation, she joined her mother and sister, the late Rosemary Gendron, in the operation of Curley's Beauty Salon in Springfield. She moved in 1946 to Stockbridge, where she and her mother opened Curley's Beauty Salon on Maple Street. She operated the salon until retiring in 1997. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, where she taught catechism. She also assisted her husband, Francis J. Drake, former superintendent of the Stockbridge cemeteries, in the operation of St. Joseph's and the town's cemeteries. She was a member of the Stockbridge Grange and, in the 1960s and 1970s, helped operate the town's information booth. She was a member of the Secular St. Francis Order, St. Clare of Assisi Fraternity. Her husband, whom she married Jan. 25, 1949, died April 7, 1997. She leaves three sons, James C. Drake of Upland, Calif., Paul F. Drake of Granville, Ohio, and John M.F. Drake of Stockbridge; two daughters, Karen Ruby O'Neill of Becket and Sebastian, Fla., and Frances M. Drake of West Stockbridge; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Raymond Hannigan, who died in 1983; a great-grandson, George "Tommy" O'Neill, who died in 1988, and her sister, Rosemary C. Glendon, who died in 2001. The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge by the Rev. Steven F. McGuigan, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Friday, today, from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to St. Joseph's Church or to Shriners Hospital in care of the funeral home.
