Herbert T. Armitt

Herbert Thomas Armitt, 92, of 235 Walker St., Kimball Farms Retirement Community, died Sunday evening at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, where he had resided for a month. Born in Paterson, N.J., on June 4, 1910, son of Herbert and Effie Rae MacPherson Armitt, he was a 1928 graduate of East Side High School. He also attended William Paterson College and Columbia University. An electrical engineer, he was employed by Okonite Wire & Cable in Passaic, N.J., for 37 years, retiring in 1973. Following his retirement, he moved to Williamstown. He had made his home at Kimball Farms for more than six years. Mr. Armitt was a well-known naturalist and bird watcher, who, together with his wife, the former Lillian Colette Siess, was an assistant co-leader for day trips from the Museum of Natural History in New York. He was a past president of the New Jersey Audubon Society and a past president of the Hackensack Audubon Society, where he edited and published its official publication. He was also a member of the North Berkshire and Massachusetts Audubon societies and a member and past national chairman of the Clan MacPherson Association, U.S. branch. Mr. Armitt was a former member of St. Paul's Church in Montvale, N.J., where he sang in the choir. He was a member of the vestry of St. John's Church in Williamstown and, most recently, of Trinity Church. He leaves his wife, whom he married June 23, 1951. The funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 at Trinity Church in Lenox by the Rev. Nancy Miller, rector. Interment of his ashes will be in the Trinity Church columbarium immediately following the funeral. There will be no calling hours. The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests that those who wish may make memorial donations to the fund of one's choice in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
